The Definition of BYOD and its Implementation in Education

BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device like the above illustration or in other words bring your own tool. What is meant here is a gadget or technology instrument that we have, such as laptop, tablet, smartphone, or even PC stick. Discourse about BYOD already existed in the early 21st century, where smartphone and tablet began to be introduced.

Several schools in the US, Europe and Australia have already started and implemented BYOD. Even today, some schools in Japan, China, South Korea and some developed countries in Asia are also implementing BYOD. School recommends students to bring tablets into the classroom. In other words, they buy tablet specifications requested by school.

In the classroom, their tablets also become a medium of learning, not entertainment media. Some student support applications for learning were also introduced by the teacher. Teachers have previously been trained on operational applications / software. There are so many applications/software/sites for supporting learning activitiea , for example in site. There are paid and also basic/free account.

Some benefits of BYOD have been derived from some research. First, facilitate interaction and monitor student progress in learning. Inside and outside the classroom, teachers can monitor student upgrades in a single subject. Second, make learning more personal and fun. Learning with personal devices, such as smartphones, makes learning close in hand. Third, teachers play more role as admin and manager. Teacher organize forum discussion sessions as in the Moodle site.

It is estimated that in 5 to 10 years later, BYOD will be a part of education. Because now there are many MOOC or Massive Online Open Course offered. All subjects and education levels are now offered online or with applications.

And to avoid the distraction focus of student learning for the more formal aspect, BYOD become one of the ways, because not necessarily what is offered outside school can be in accordance with the curriculum and assessment requested by the school.

Iteraction in the digital world will become a part of millennial generation. It would be very dangerous if the virtual world or social media is not used as a medium of learning. Many of us who know gadgets that we have can be a source of learning. But not many know how to apply/optimize this existing source. And the teacher must be the pioneer and gatekeeper of this millenial generation of learning. BYOD is one of the Z-generation learning methods today.
