2 Effective ways to eliminate bad habits according to Islam

2 Effective ways to eliminate bad habits according to Islam - Each of us has a bad or negative habit that we want to eliminate in our daily lives. But often we fail and give up before we succeed in eliminating it. Some of the factors that cause failure include the lack of internal encouragement and support from the outside, being too hasty, and bad habits that are long and ingrained in our lives.

Bad habits that are constantly be ignored without any effort to eliminate and replace them with good habits, will not only cause various problems for ourselves, but also can affect others. So, how does Islamic concept teach about how to effectively eliminate a bad habit?

Historically, pre-Islamic Arab civilizations had bad habits that were ingrained in their behavior. It is not easy in the early phase of Islamic da'wah to ask people explicitly to abandon habits that have been ingrained in their behavior for a long time. Therefore, in correcting these bad habits, Islam uses two methods.

The first method is to delay the improvement of these bad habits until the faith strengthens in the hearts of Muslims. The power of faith will be a powerful impulse that will make it easier for the process to let go of bad habits while teaching new habits instead. For this reason, most of the verses of Qur'an which descended on Mecca (Makkiyah verses) in the initial phase of Islamic da'wah were fundamentally related to the appeal to belief in Tawheed (aqeedah).

The second method, training the mental readiness of the Muslims to abandon these bad habits. This is done by forming an opposite response in stages with response required to be released. This method is used by Qur'an to overcome problem of drinking khamar.

At first, Qur'an makes Muslims dislike and hates drinking khamar without forbid them in total. Then gradually khamar was forbidden to them. The first verse relating to khamar shows that the negative effects of khamar are greater than its benefits. This is an attempt to make Muslims dislike khamar and encourage them to avoid drinking khamar, see Al-Baqarah verse 219.

Then Qur'an goes to a more decisive level and binds the Muslims to feel deterrent from drinking khamar and encourages them to avoid khamar. This happens when some sahaba do prayer in drunken condition, so they are mistaken in reading the Qur'an verses. Therefore, Qur'an forbids them from approaching prayer in a drunken state. This exercise has made them have mental readiness to move on to the next phase, that is total prohibition related to khamar with the revelation of verses that completely forbid khamar in total, Al-Maidah verses 90-91. When the verse which forbade khamar was revealed, all the Muslims of Medina poured out the remnants of khamar that were on them in the streets of Medina.

From the description above, we can learn the lesson that in removing bad habits that have become a tradition, a gradual process is needed, not directly prohibiting it completely so that bad habits are erased, but step by step. Human nature tends to be in a hurry, it will actually lead to the emergence of other bad things. In addition, we need a role model who has authority over us and we can make it a place to lean on and continue to strengthen our steps to eliminate various negative aspects in our daily lives.

The way to eliminate bad habits exemplified by the abolition of drinking khamar above, also teaches that Islam is very accommodating and respects the traditions of society. Islam does not teach ways that are full of anger and coercion as a solution to overcome people's problems.

This method is also used by "Walisongo" in reconstructing traditions and culture of Indonesian archipelago at that time, especially the Javanese people, so as to bring the success of their Islamic da'wah as evidenced by the spread of Islam throughout the archipelago. We are also invited to realize that all these achievements cannot be obtained instantly, need a process and a relatively long time.
