How to stimulate students to ask through simple active learning method

"Any question?" is a question that teachers often ask to their students. After the teacher asks like that, students just keep quiet. Some teachers assume that students are not interested, other teachers conclude everything is clear. Unfortunately, what really happens is, students are not ready to ask questions.

Learning process in the classroom is often become topic of discussion among educators. Discussing about how to students learn is very exciting topic. How to students learn becomes a determinant in achieving learning goals and understanding of teaching materials. However, only a few teachers who have the concept of finding solutions, teachers are reluctant to change the old methods and even tend to be trapped in conventional methods in the learning process.

The process of learning basic competencies in real subjects will be more effective, if students are active. One technique for creating active learning conditions is: "Motivating students to learn the subject matter on their own, without any prior explanation from the teacher". This very simple strategy can stimulate students to be able to ask questions.

The first step of the implementation starts from determining the subject matter that has been agreed upon between the teacher and students. Subject matter that has extensive information and does not have a detailed explanation is one of the ideal subject matter to be discussed.

The main goal is to stimulate students' curiosity. Next, students are required to pair up with other friends to explore the subject matter. Each partner is tried to understand the subject matter and mark subject matter that has not been understood. Encourage students to insert as many question marks as possible in the subject matter until the specified time limit. Then, students are welcome to take turns asking questions and the teacher must be prepared to answer them. Through teacher answers to student questions, there is an active learning process.

This means that the teacher will teach through answers to various questions from students, this strategy can be further developed according to subjects, needs and conditions.

If the teacher feels students have difficulty learning their own subject matter, provide relevant information or basic knowledge needed so students can ask questions. Although this is a simple method, appreciation also affects students' learning motivation. By giving appreciation to students, it will grow a positive response and will encourage students to be more motivated in learning.
