How to Teach Generation Z, A Challenge for Teachers

Education continues to develop along with changing times. Changes in education that occur include changes from various aspects, ranging from education policy to the development of the implementation of learning.

Changes that occur in various aspects related to education certainly have an impact on all people who are in the world of education, including teachers.

Teacher as the front guard in implementing education has a very vital role. In fact, the quality of human resources from an educational institution is generally determined by the role of a teacher. Therefore, teacher becomes a central and important part in the progress and improvement in the quality of education.

The role of the teacher at each time has different challenges. If past teachers have challenges in limited educational facilities and infrastructure, the challenges of today's teachers may no longer be on facilities and infrastructure.

One of the crucial challenges of today's teachers is the characteristics of students. In general, all students ranging from elementary school to secondary school are included in the generation Z category.

Generation Z is generation who born in the digital era. Generation Z known as the digital generation. This generation is growing and developing with a great dependence on digital technology.

Then what are the characteristics of generation Z that become a challenge for teachers when educating them in school?

Generation Z is very synonymous with technology, they are a generation that is used to using information technology, including various computer facilities and applications. It is this characteristic that challenges the teacher when educating them at school.

The challenge for teachers in dealing with the characteristics of generation Z students. Teachers must be able to see these characteristics as positive things that will support the smoothness and quality of learning.

Therefore, teachers must be able to package learning that is oriented to the development of the characteristics of generation Z students. One form of learning packaging that is suitable for this generation is the use of technology in learning.

The use of technology in learning is an important part that must be developed by teachers to deal with generation Z. Learning presented needs to integrate technology so that generation Z has the means to devote all its capabilities.

The integration of technology in learning process can be done by teachers by packing digital teaching materials, the use of computer-based learning media, the use of various learning support applications and the implementation of learning evaluation by using digital technology.

Integrating technology in learning is certainly a challenge for teachers. Teachers should carry out self-development in the field of technology in order to be able to present the integration of technology in learning.

Integration of technology in learning, is expected to be able to build the characteristics of generation Z into something positive value. In addition, it is also expected to be a medium of self-development for each student to have digital skill that will later be used in community life.

In a social science perspective, the characteristics of generation Z are likely to have longer time to communicate and interact with many people from various circles.

Communication and interactions are not limited to peers, but also to younger people, even generation Z often interacts and communicates with older people. The Z generation usually uses various social media networks to carry out this interaction and communication.

In addition, the interaction and communication of generation Z does not limited to people in their country. Generation Z also has extensive cross-country communication networks.

The social characteristics of generation Z are certainly a challenge for teacher when educating them in school. If in the past, the form of interaction or communication between teacher and student was limited to school activities. Now, interactions between teacher and student occur on various social media.

Responding to the generation Z phenomenon, teachers must provide guidance to students regarding the procedures and ethics of good communication with older people, especially with teachers.

The teacher needs to provide affirmation about ethics when communicating with him through various social media. The use of appropriate, polite and not excessive language is an important point that must be emphasized to students.

In addition, the teacher must also provide guidance in choosing the moment when contacting the teacher through social media, so that students do not arbitrarily contact the teacher as they want at any time.

In the context of learning, these social characteristics can be used by teachers to develop broader and more global learning. With cross-country interaction and communication directed, teachers can direct and guide students to develop their knowledge through sharing experiences and knowledge from various countries.

In general, the challenge of teachers facing the social characteristics of generation Z lies in the internalization, affirmation, guidance and debriefing about the ethics of communicating through social media, both with peers, younger or older.

The ethics of communication and interaction are important provisions for generation Z so that they do not make mistakes when interacting and communicating with various groups, both action and speech mistakes.

The next characteristic of generation Z is that they are a generation who are used to doing various activities at the same time. This generation can read, watch and listen to the music at the same time.

This characteristic is certainly a challenge for teachers when educating them in the classroom. Multitasking characteristic can be a capital for more effective learning. But it also, these multitasking characteristics can become obstacles in learning process.

Therefore, teacher need to present learning that can accommodate the multitasking of this generation Z students. The teacher must present various things that can stimulate all students activities to be interesting and useful learning activities.

The teacher can no longer just write on the board when teaching a concept to students. Teachers are required to provide additional components, such as giving reading texts, video playback and kinesthetic activities when teaching a concept to students.

Thus, the multitasking characteristics possessed by generation Z can be devoted to various beneficial activities related to classroom learning.


Based on the exposure of 3 characteristics of generation Z and the challenges for teachers, the challenge to face generation Z students lies in the way or strategy in carrying out the process of learning and character internalization which includes interaction and communication ethics.

Teachers need to offer technology-based teaching methods to direct and develop students' digital skills. In addition, learning in the classroom must accommodate the multitasking characteristics of students, so that activities carried out in the classroom become useful, and have a relationship with learning.

Finally, teachers need to internalize, debrief, guidance and affirmation regarding the ethics of communication and interaction to the Z generation. This is expected to make Z generation students better able to manage their forms of communication and interactions with everyone.
