Toilet and Library, Two Parameters for Measuring the Quality of School Institutions

The concept of Total Quality Management states that one of the parameters that can be used to determine the quality of institutional management is the condition of the toilet. When the toilet is clean and does not smell, the management within the institution is good.

Although it seems trivial, but it must be admitted that toilet are also part of the daily cycle of human beings in an institution.

During the day-to-day work, the people inside the institution will certainly doing sanitation activities. So, toilet also become a part that must be considered so that the work climate in the institution can be more comfortable and conducive.

If an institution is able to manage small parts in its daily work cycle, such as toilet, it can be assumed that the institution will also be better at doing bigger jobs.

Likewise, if you want to see the quality management of a school, you can see it from the condition of students' toilets. Teacher toilet usually tend to be clean, because in quantity the use is not as massive as student's toilet.

However, most student toilets are not maintained, compared to teacher toilets. If the school is able to manage small things, such as student toilets, then it is likely that the bigger things in the school can be done well.

Later, I added one more parameter to see the quality of a school. In the end, I consider that school is not only an institution's management business.

Moreover, as a human resource institution which is often assumed to be the center of science, in every school there should also be a thick learning climate.

As a place in which we can explore various kinds of knowledge. So, it's no exaggeration if we also have to expect that the school contains people who always love science.

If the fitness center is a gathering place for people who really love sports, and shopping centers is a gathering place for people who love shopping.

So it is very strange if we see schools --- which are said--- as the center of science, but they are not filled with people who are science lovers.

And one place that can reflect the crazy climate of science in a school is the library. If we agree to view that books are a source of knowledge.

So the library as a place to store books is a warehouse that stores various stocks of knowledge. Like shopping centers that have large warehouses to hold stock of goods for consumers.

So it is very natural for schools as learning centers to also provide the stock of knowledge needed by their students.

If a clean and comfortable student toilet can be used as a good school management parameter, the availability of a good library in the school can also be used as a parameter to assess that the school is serious in providing an abundant supply of knowledge for its students.

The school is not just a good school - because it is managed with a very good management system --- but also a brilliant school, because the nature of the school as a nest of knowledge is firmly embedded in the school climate.

Then, the question is, how to assess the quality of a good school library? Library is an ecosystem that actively engages in literacy work for the people around it. As written by Asril Novian Alifi at, a school library can be said to be of good quality if it meets several criteria as follows:

First, the quantity of visitors and conducive circulation of books.

In essence, a book is written to be read. Not for display only. We often see a room in the school that written "Library" on the door. But after entering the room, there was not one person in it except one sitting at the guard table, especially when we saw the list of borrowing books was still quiet. Asril prefer to call this room as a storehouse of books rather than a library.

Of course we all agree that the library is built with the aim that people in the school (not just students) can read books there, so that their knowledge can be more developed.

One parameter is whether the goal is achieved or not, we can see from the quantity of visitors and the circulation of books borrowed. When that was not achieved, of course the existence of the library would be useless.

Second, a varied collection of books

As science lovers, when we enter the library and meet with book titles from various genres, we certainly show a happy expression. Especially if among the rows of books there are many books that we like, for example story books.

Story books is the entrance for someone to love reading activities. If we look at the journey of great figures who love science so much, they start from reading story books.

Albert Einstein filled his childhood by reading Karl Max's novels, which later led him to become a crazy person who read and loved science.

In a book entitled "Bukuku Kakiku", which contains writings from major Indonesian figures, ranging from scholars, scientists, writers, to great polluters.

All of them claimed to have started their love of reading activities starting from reading story books such as the comic book Kho Ping Ho, "Lima Sekawan" detective novel, to the puppet story book of R.A. Kosasih.

Usually, a crowded school library is a library that has a lot of story books, not a library whose collection is only limited to subjects books.

Regarding this story and comic books, Hikmat Dharmawan wrote a very interesting article, which also contained an appeal that we should not worry too much if children are fond of comics. It is very natural because comics and storybooks are very interesting and easy to read.

Hikmat also said that comics can also be an interesting learning media. Even if the concerns are still not gone, there are currently many safer books. Story books that are rich in educational elements, such as science comics or story books that elevate educational values.

Third, Continuous Literacy Programs

Establishing a school library is not only about filling an empty room in a school with a pile of books, but also about a continuous literacy movement within the school environment.

A good library, like pro traders, is actively marketing their merchandise to consumers with a variety of creative and sustainable activities.

When the library has begun to be empty of visitors, the school library manager must not remain silent. They have to do more pro-active programs to persuade the school community, for example by bringing books to students through various ways.

Or it can also be done by holding various literacy events that can involve school people with joy, such as holding book review competitions, storing telling, book submission competitions, and others.

Yes, school libraries must feel anxious when they see school community starting to not be passionate about literacy activities. Because school which filled by people who are crazy to read is school that will have different energies. Energy is always encouraging to continue to think critically, keep creative, and continue to grow.
